New grants awarded to MCC
At the Nov. 11, 2010 MCC Board of Trustees meeting, the consent agenda was approved without discussion. The following grants were accepted as part of that agenda:
American Association of Community Colleges/Lumina Foundation
Plus 50 Completion Survey
Grant funds will be used for recruitment and enrollment services for *stop-out students, 50+ years of age, in Cass County. The goal is to get these citizens to reenroll in college and pursue a degree, certificate or non credit credentials.
Grant amount: $14,900 (no match required)
Grant period: Oct. 1, 2010 – July 31, 2011
Missouri department of higher Education/Lumina Foundation
Win-Win: Going to Scale – MCC-KC
MCC is joining 35 states in seeking and recruiting *stop-out students to enroll in degree completion programs. MCC will research and find former students who have credits that qualify them for an associate’s degree and explore if degrees can be granted retroactively.
Grant amount: $40,000 (sub recipient: no match required)
Grant period: Oct. 1, 2010 – Aug. 30, 2013
*Stop-out students are those students who intend(ed) on completing a degree, but have filtered in and out of college for various reasons.

Board of Trustee meeting re-cap
Students, Employees Honored for Response to Attack
Several MCC students and employees were honored at last night’s MCC board of trustees meeting for their quick response to the Sept. 14 knife attack on MCC-Penn Valley Dean Al Dimmitt. Board President David Disney, who himself was among the immediate responders at the scene of the attack, read a commendation from the board that recognized the “incredible strength and resolve” of those who were in the immediate vicinity of the attack and who were able to restrain the assailant to prevent additional injuries.
Following the presentation Disney commented about how people never know when they will be tested, and his strong emotions toward those that do stand up when they are tested. Disney concluded by stating, “I’m proud to be a part of this organization.”
During an emotional statement delivered by Dimmitt, he thanked his family and those who came to his aid that day.
Levy Increase
Additionally, a notice of public hearing was held to discuss an increase to the general fund levy from $0.2266 up to $0.2329 per one hundred dollars of assessed value in Jackson, Clay, Cass and Platte counties. The increase was approved.

MCC and Gould Evans has been selected as an award recipient for the work done on three FEMA buildings located at MCC- Longview, Maple Woods and Penn Valley. Watch The MCC Insider for more on that in up-coming weeks.

MCC Board of Trustees meeting
The September MCC Board of Trustees meeting will be held the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Administrative Center Board Room.

Brown - new director of resource development
Carolyn Brown, former director of risk management and board relations, is MCC’s new director of resource development. Brown, who has been with MCC since 1986, will take over for Chris Butler, who is moving to a research position with the Institute for Workforce Innovation.
Brown’s former position will not be back-filled; instead, responsibilities for risk management and board relations will be distributed among existing positions. Risk management responsibilities will be shared by the human resources department and Kathy Walter-Mack, new chief of staff. Walter-Mack will also handle legal and contract matters.
Cindy Johnson, program coordinator in the chancellor’s office, was appointed last week as Brown’s replacement as the secretary for MCC’s Board of Trustees.
Brown's official start date in her new position has not yet been determined.

Board meeting recap
At the Aug. 26 meeting of the MCC Board of Trustees, Carolyn Brown was acknowledged for her dedication as the secretary for the MCC Board of Trustees for the past 15 years, serving through three chancellors. The board appointed Cindy Johnson as the new secretary to the Board of Trustees, effective Aug. 27, 2010.
Any items that need to be added to board meetings should now be sent to Cindy Johnson, program coordinator for the chancellor’s office.
The board meeting schedule, which includes dates agenda items need to be submitted, can be found on the InfoExchange by searching ‘board meeting’ and clicking on the appropriate link. (An updated schedule with changes will be posted soon.)
