Flag football and Intramural basketball, volleyball at MCC-Blue River

Spring is here, and it’s time again for the sporting life. MCC-Blue River hosts flag football and intramural basketball and volleyball this season. Sign up forms are in the office in the Arts & Sciences building. The deadline to sign up for five on five flag football is Wednesday, April 6, and games begin the following Friday. Intramural sports shall commence soon after.

Football players will convene at the soccer field on the east side of campus after 1 p.m. The season will consist of five games, followed by a playoff for the top two teams. Flag football teams must be made up of at least 50% MCC students.

The free spring intramural tournaments for basketball will be held April 12 and 14 at 2:15 p.m. in the gymnasium. All MCC students are welcome, and each team must include at least two MCC student participants. T-shirts will be available for those who have not already acquired them.

Missouri Comets Soccer Team honors MCC-Blue River Trail Blazers

The Trail Blazers Men’s Soccer Team at Metropolitan Community College-Blue River continues to receive accolades for their NJCAA Region XVI Championship title. At half time of a recent Missouri Comets Indoor Soccer game, contested at the Independence Events Center, the Comets recognized the MCC-Blue River Trail Blazers for their hard won championship.

In this two part video, two Blue River Soccer Team players compete in a half-time “horse race,” mounted on stuffed horses. Trail Blazers Darrin Kraft and Sam York have quite a task in navigating their plush thoroughbreds. In the second half of the video, the Trail Blazers are honored by the Missouri Comets for winning their championship.

Intramural tournament champions in basketball, volleyball, dodgeball

Students from Metropolitan Community College-Blue River competed with students from MCC-Longview and MCC-Penn Valley in the intramural tournaments, a huge event hosted by MCC-Blue River. The intramural tournaments boasted 21 teams comprising 78 players of three sports, including basketball, volleyball and dodgeball. In all, eleven basketball teams, seven volleyball, and three dodgeball teams took the court.

The final winner of the basketball tournament was the team KJock, whose members were Kyle Jackson, Korey Stucker, Hakim Houston and DeAngelo Mack. They defeated a team made up of Somali students from MCC-Penn Valley in the final round. Their contrasting styles of play made for a fun final.

Team SWAG won the Dodgeball Tournament. SWAG was the only team to participate in all three intramural tournaments. The team members were

MCC-Longview at sea on the USS Missouri

To the untrained eye it might look like just another mess hall on the USS Missouri, an Iowa-class battleship.

But if you look close enough you will see someone from MCC-Longview has a bit of school pride.

The Missouri was ordered in 1940 and commissioned in June 1944. In the Pacific Theater of World War II she fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and shelled the Japanese home islands, and she fought in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. She was decommissioned in 1955 into the United States Navy reserve fleets (the "Mothball Fleet"), but reactivated and modernized in 1984 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan, and provided fire support during Operation Desert Storm in January/February 1991.

Missouri received a total of 11 battle stars for service in World War II, Korea, and the Persian Gulf, and was finally decommissioned on 31 March 1992, but remained on the Naval Vessel Register until her name was struck in January 1995. In 1998, she was donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association and became a museum ship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

It just goes to show that The Lakers are everywhere.

MCC- Blue River winter tournaments

Volleyball and Basketball

jelly at MCC-Blue River!

The fun begins with the volleyball tournament on December 2. The game starts at 1 PM and ends at 3 PM. Participation cost is $5 per player with a 4 person minimum and a 5 maximum per team. Each team must have at least 1 of each gender and include [at least] 1 MCC student. All participants will receive a BR t-shirt.

Not long after the volleyball face-off, the 3 v 3 basketball tourney will ensue on December 6. The start time is 1 PM and will conclude at 3 PM. Each team must have at least 3 players with a limit of 5 players total. A MCC student must play on each team. The winning team will score a championship t-shirt. MCC may develop intermediate and beginner categories based on the number of registered players.

All activities will be in the Arts and Sciences Gym.

MCC-Maple Woods softball team holds 100-inning fundraiser

The MCC-Maple Woods softball team put a lot of effort into their fundraiser for next season - about 12 hours and 100 innings worth. The girls played 100 consecutive innings of softball beginning at 8 a.m. Oct. 9 at Happy Rock Park in Gladstone, Mo. Funds were raised via player sponsorship for each girl or outright donations.

MCC-Maple Woods men's soccer team defeats CCC

The men improved their record to 2-2-1, winning a hard-fought game 4-1. Luke Evans led the charge with 2 goals and one assist, while Nick Petersson (assisted by Josh Ogren) and Cameron Hockett (assisted by Luke Sherman) each contributed a score.

MCC-Maple Woods women's soccer in action

The MCC-Maple Woods women's soccer team scored a convincing victory over Coffeyville Community College, defeating their opponents 7-0. Mallory Craig (Monarchs leading scorer), Tara Chavez, Ashley Forbes, Kortni Kellogg and Christin Worley each had a goal a piece, while Shelby Frisby contributed 2 scores. Defensive leaders included Brooke Hickey, Shea Staples and Kara Chavez, and goalkeeper Maggie Seibert earned her fourth shutout of the season.

Lakers Volleyball continues to roll through the season - next home game tonight

The Lakers Volleyball team went 3-1 this past weekend at the Highland Community College regional tournament. The successful weekend pushes the Lakers to a 7-3 record as they now return home for two games.

Here is what assistant coach Marnie Winters had to say about the weekend tournament:

"Allen County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College were our only two losses of the season when going into the Highlands tourney. To beat them BOTH, and quite impressively, was a result we hadn't expected.

"We lost to Highlands, but it was due to our own unforced errors - so if we meet them again, it's certain to be a different level of play. 

"We finished a very respectable 10-4 in sets for the weekend."

Kathryn Partridge lead in assists with 145 for the weekend. Andrea Lopez had 60 digs in the two days. Ali Cavanaugh was second with 58. Kalei Moppin was all-around impressive with 44 kills, 3 aces, 9 blocks and 50 digs. Emily Brand matched Kalei's lead with 3 aces and lead the team in blocks with 14.

The Lakers meet William Woods' JV again tonight, Sept. 14. The Lakers will then play Coffeyville Community College for the first time this season on Thursday, Sept. 16. Both games are at home and start at 6 p.m. 

Registration is open for the annual MCC-Maple Woods Baseball Golf Classic

With budget cuts affecting most of our departments here on campus the annual Maple Woods Golf Classic has become a vital to supporting the baseball program and the student-athletes. This is the Monarchs’ major fundraising event and all money raised goes right back into the program in the form of scholarships, equipment and necessary travel expenses.

The Baseball Golf Classic, played this year at Cardinal Hill Golf Course in Liberty, Mo., is a four-person scramble tournament and also features a putting contest, long drive contest, a closest-to-the-pin competition and sports memorabilia auction. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams and a barbeque lunch will be provided to all participants.

The event will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 3, 2010. Cost is $125 per player or $475 for a team of four. For questions or registration, contact deb.cougill@mcckc.edu.

MCC-Longview Lakers volleyball kicks off another intense season

In their opening week, the MCC-Longview Lakers' volleyball team did not shy away from their competition in two intense matches both on the road and at home.

The Lakers dropped their first game of the season against Allen County Community College in an away game, but two days later came right back for a big win against Cottey College.

The Lakers beat Cottey in three sets. The scores were 25-16, 25-14, 25-12.


In the final set the team had a 44 percent kill rate. The Lakers made 44 serves with only 4 errors - or a 91 percent kill rate. Andrea Lopez had 14 digs, Emily Brand, Ali Cavanaugh, and Mel Church had nine kills each.

The Lakers are on the road again this weekend as they take on Kansas City Kansas Community College in a double header on Sept 3 and 4. The following weekend they then head to the Highland Community College Tournament in Kansas

Laker's Volleyball team to take on alumni this Friday.

The MCC-Longview Laker's Volleyball team will be taking on a familiar foe this Friday: Former Players.

Join Lakers past and present for the MCC-Longview Laker Alumni Challenge. Current players will square off against former players and alumni in a scrimmage that should be full of fireworks.

"It's a yearly event focused on keeping in-touch with our past volleyball players and also allows us a challenging pre-season scrimmage," said assistant coach Marnie Winters. "Plus, keeping our alumni involved really helps keeps this program alive."

The Alumni Challenge is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday at the MCC-Longview Recreation Center. The entire bout will include three sets and will give fans a chance to see the 2010 Lakers Volleyball team in action.

Morrison continues to advance in baseball career

Logan Morrison, former MCC-Maple Woods Monarch and current starting first baseman for the New Orleans Zephyrs (a minor-league affiliate of the Florida Marlins), has recently completed another step in his baseball journey. After playing in the 2010 All-Star Futures game recently, Morrison, who was drafted by the Marlins in 2005, stepped into a major league starter role for the first time.

Morrison started in left field for the Marlins against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, July 27. Morrison contributed one of the Marlins’ five hits that nights as the Giants went on the win the game 6-4. Since then, Morrison has contributed 2 doubles and an RBI for the Marlins and looks to continue his hitting streak tonight in the final game of the series.

MCC-Maple Woods athletes named to NJCAA Academic Team

Congratulations to the following student athletes from MCC-Maple Woods, who were named to the National Junior College Athletics Association’s (NJCAA) 2010 Region XVI Academic Team. Athletes are named to the team for achieving and maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA and for team leadership.

MCC-Maple Woods STC offers summer camps, league play opportunities

Boost your summer league play or get a head start on fall with hitting and pitching clinics from MCC-Maple Woods coaches and players at the Sports Training Center. Head coach Marty Kilgore and assistant coach Kenny Hook will offer hitting and pitching camps designed to give players a solid foundation to build their skills on.

The all-ages hitting camp, directed by Hook, will be held Aug. 3, 2010 from 5-8 p.m. in the Sports Training Center facility. Participants will learn the fundamentals and mechanics used by college and many Major League Baseball organizations. Cost is $60 per player and interested players can register by sending an email to Kenny.Hook@mcckc.edu.

Along with the hitting camp, players will have the opportunity to attend a pitching camp directed by Kilgore from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 4, 2010. College- and professional-level pitching mechanics and techniques will be covered. Cost is $60 per player and interested players can register by emailing Kenny Hook at the address above.

Players may attend both camps at the discounted rate of $100 per player.

In addition to summer hitting and pitching camps, the MCC-Maple Woods STC staff will be offering fall league play to local players aged 11-14. Tryouts for the fall team, which will play and practice from Aug. 15-Oct. 15, 2010, will take place at 3 p.m. July 30 at the STC and 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at the Tiffany Hills Sports Complex, fields 5 and 6. There is a $10 tryout fee per player and individuals are responsible for providing their own equipment.

Players chosen for the team will get receive a 3-month membership to the STC facility and the opportunity to learn from college level coaches, and will participate in league play and tournaments. Morrison plays in All-Star Futures Game

Continuing the long string of successes that MCC-Maple Woods baseball players have had following their time as a Monarch, Logan Morrison recently played in the 2010 All-Star Futures game in Anaheim, Calif. One of the top minor-league prospects this year, Morrison now plays first base for the New Orleans Zephyrs, a AAA affiliate league of the Florida Marlins, who drafted him in 2005. He was named the Marlins’ minor-league Player of the Month in June.

Morrison grew up in the Northland and attended Park Hill High School and Blue Valley West High School in the Kansas City Metro area before his family relocated to New Orleans. After being drafted by the Marlins, he returned to Kansas City to play baseball for the Monarchs.

SCOREBOARD!

Crews spent all day Tuesday tearing down the old scoreboard that for more than 25 years stood just beyond the outfield fence at the MCC-Longview baseball fields.

The board was being replace with an new board that will be ready to use once baseball season starts up again in the spring semester.



The original baseball scoreboard was donated by the MCC-Longview student government in 1984 and has not worked in the past season due to its age. Coaches and athletics department officials said they were excited to have a new scoreboard when they start the season next year.
