Bookstore Volunteer Opportunities for Employees
To volunteer, contact the bookstore manager to set up a time (contact information at bottom of post).
Volunteer Descriptions (It’s not a job, it’s an adventure!)
Internet order Window: Locations: PV, MW (8/11-8/26)
• Organize boxed orders.
• Verify student ID and order # against Bookstore order list.
• Validate ordered items against order summary.
• Reseal box and release to student.
• May require some lifting.
Receipt checker: Locations: PV
• Check merchandise/book receipts to match the merchandise/book leaving the store.
• Direct incoming traffic to the store.
Book re-stocker: Locations: PV
• Restock the back shelves.
• Will require some lifting.
Merchandise Re-stocker: Locations: PV
• Restock the sales floor.
• Will require some lifting.
Financial Aid Checker: Locations: PV, BTC, MW (8/11-8/26)
• Verify all students receiving financial aid have their aid posted to their accounts. If the aid is not posted, they will not be able to charge their purchases to their financial aid. BTC IS VALIDATING INTERNET ORDERS
• Volunteer will be equipped with a computer to check their account information prior to the student waiting in line.

MCC in the News: Joplin volunteering
When MCC-Longview continuing education coordinator Diane Mannion sent an all-employee email inviting colleagues to join her for a trip to Joplin, Mo., to help with clean-up efforts in the tornado-ravaged town, she probably didn't think it would land her on a live news broadcast at 6:00 on a sleepy Friday morning.
Mannion and Longview registrar David Fritz were featured in a live broadcast on KMBC 9 FirstNews before departing for Joplin in the wee hours of Friday, July 1. Meteorologist Lisa Teachman,
who has been covering the aftermath of the devastating May 22 tornado, spoke with Mannion and Fritz about their motivation to help with clean-up efforts.
Fritz, who had spent three days in Joplin a few weeks earlier, said he had personally experienced the devastating impact of severe storms when a tornado ripped through his hometown in Kansas in 2001.
Mannion said she and Terri Kelley, a program specialist at Longview, devised the volunteer coordination plan while looking through photos that Kelley had taken when she traveled to Joplin in June. The two chose July 1 as the date for MCC volunteers to help, and more than 70 MCC students, employees and family members signed up to make the trip.
The volunteers met at Longview early Friday morning and caravanned to Joplin, about 2.5 hours south of Lee's Summit.

At 5 a.m. more than 70 faculty and staff gathered at the flag poles at MCC-Longview as they prepared to head south to Joplin, Missouri.

Volunteers needed to clean Penn Valley Park
Penn Valley Park Conservancy is dedicated to restoring, preserving and enhancing Penn Valley Park as a vital urban green space. The 176.58 acre park is located just north of the MCC-Penn Valley campus and will be the subject of a community cleanup day of bush honeysuckles, graffiti and general cleaning on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Area workers from the community include volunteers from the Metropolitan Community Service Program, Maincor, Greystone Neighbor, Indigo Wild, MCSP and others to complete this cleanup effort. The MCC community has been invited to join.
Volunteers who are interested should meet just before 9 a.m. on the 21st in front of Indigo Wild, located at 3125 Wyandotte Street, Kansas City, Mo. just off of 31st Terrace between Broadway and Main.

MCC-Blue River seeks volunteers for City of Independence Spring Clean-Up
The city of Independence will have receptacles in the parking lot at MCC-Blue River so that people in the local community may dispose of any unwanted items they have accumulated over the winter. The City of Independence Spring Clean-Up is a program designed to aid elderly and handicapped citizens to dispose of unwanted garbage and items.
From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, volunteers will be needed to help unload the items that are collected and possibly to go with city employees who will pick up items from elderly and disabled neighbors who have requested assistance.
It’s a fun, fast paced morning to work, and students, staff, faculty and the general public are all invited to volunteer their help. Watch a nationally recognized community service program at work and be part of the action.

The MCC-Longview Flights of Fancy kite festival needs YOU!
The fifth annual MCC-Longview Flights of Fancy kite festival, presented by Farmers Insurance, needs your help.
To make this amazing all-day festival a huge success we need volunteers like YOU. As we invite close to 15,000 people to the MCC-Longview camps we need ambassadors to help represent MCC, to answer questions, to man the entrances and exits, and much more.
This festival can not be a huge success without your help and support.

Volunteer for a 'day on instead of a day off'
Join MCC for the Second Annual MLK Day of Service. Last year, 500 students, faculty, staff and community members made it a 'Day on instead of a day off' by in celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of humanity and service. By volunteering to participate on this day, you can become a part of a vital MCC tradition as well as a national event celebrating community service.“If everyone does a little, than we can achieve big things,” said a volunteer from last year. “Someone once said that service is the way we pay rent for living on this planet. I am way behind on paying rent, so I have a lot of things I need to do and I am glad to be a part of MCC's MLK Day of Service.”

Volunteer opportunity - Bushwacking at Penn Valley Park
MCC is looking for volunteers to get down and dirty on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Penn Valley Park. The Bushwhacking event is aimed to enhance the park by greatly increasing public safety and make the park more usable by families and residents.
Volunteers (teenagers or older) should arrive at Penn Valley Park before 9 a.m. on Nov. 6 and park on Penn Drive, which is the road to the west of the lake. The activity will end at 11 a.m. Volunteers will need to provide their own bushwhacking tools (shovels, sickles, rakes, weed whackers, bow saws, limb loppers). Work will include cutting smaller bush honeysuckle, hauling brush to the pickup area, applying brush killer to cut stems and picking up trash. City employees will be on hand with chain saws.
Once the brush is collected, the parks department will load the brush onto trucks and haul away to appropriate landfill or for mulch.
Be sure to wear something you are comfortable in and don’t mind getting dirty. A good pair of work gloves is also recommended.
Water, juice, fruit and muffins will be available. Police officers are also scheduled to be on hand.
If the weather is bad and the event has to be cancelled, the notice will be posted on this link.
(Note: the Lung Hill Run is happening at Liberty Memorial that morning. Please keep this in mind while planning for parking.)

Administrative Center employees volunteer across the district
Volunteers from the Administrative Center spent part of Tuesday and Wednesday helping out on each campus.
Kristy Edmondson volunteers every semester. “I LOVE helping students,” said Edmondson. “ I always pick Longview because it is a campus I don’t get out to very often.”
Many of the volunteers from the Administrative Center shared similar thoughts about their experiences on the campuses. Most recognized that volunteering this time of year makes us [Administrative Center employees] realize that we really do work for the students.

Former MCC-Maple Woods employee takes flight at local volunteer organization
After volunteering with the program for more than five years, Dana Buchanan has been hired as the new flight coordinator for Angel Flight. Her last day as administrative assistant at MCC-Maple Woods was Friday. Angel Flight is a national program that provides free flights to those who need medical care outside of their local area. Pilots volunteer time and aircraft to fly patients, mostly within the Heartland region, to other treatment centers for everything from surgery to chemotherapy to dialysis. The flights are free for the patients and medical providers.
Buchanan will be serving as the flight coordinator for the local chapter of Angel Flight. She will focus on matching up patients with pilots from the region to get them to their respective treatments and back home.
