The Woods goes green for Movie on the Lawn!

What could be better than a FREE movie under the stars? MCC-Maple Woods will be showing The Green Lantern at 9 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Campus Center Amphitheater (that big blank wall under the hill in the middle of campus). Free popcorn will be provided, so bring a blanket, a drink, and a date and enjoy the show!

MCC Celebrates a Night at The K

The inaugural MCC Night at the K will bring together students, alumni and employees to celebrate as one MCC at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Royals will take on the Detroit Tigers at 7:10 p.m.

All those who have an MCC ticket are invited to a free tailgate-style dinner at Arrowhead Stadium's North Club Room before heading over to Kauffman Stadium for the game. Employee* and family tickets can be purchased at www.kcroyals.com/mcckc at the cost of $5 each. Parking fee is not included in ticket price; carpooling is encouraged.

“MCC is Kansas City region’s oldest and largest institution of higher education,” said Tom Vansaghi, associate vice chancellor of college and community relations. “We are proud that for the past 95 years we have created opportunities for more than a half million students who have come through our many doors. This event will celebrate our successes and contributions to our region, as we bring our students, alumni and employees together in one place to celebrate the fact that we are One MCC.”

Doors to the tailgate will open at 5 p.m. and a presentation will begin at 6 p.m. Free t-shirts will be available (watch The MCC Insider for more on that).

The Women's Bureau, a division of the US Department of Labor and partner of the MCC Institute of Workforce Innovation, would like to invite MCC employees to participate in an upcoming seminar at the UMKC University Center on Saturday, June 4, 8 am-1 pm.

Be a Fearless Woman! is a one-day bootcamp that will help you find your purpose, face life challenges, manage money and explore new opportunities. MCC-Longview Library celebrates children's literature

Bears, tigers and books rarely seems like a great combination, but this week the MCC-Longview Library unveiled a new display that highlights some of our favorite children's classics like Paddington Bear and many others.

The new display at the Library is part of an on-going series that is working to support one of MCC-Longview's education classes that explores and uses children's literature as an education tool.

Librarian Judy Rice said not too many students realize that the college library has a full collection of contemporary and classic children's book ready for check out.

Be sure to swing by the Library to check out the display and maybe event take a stroll down memory lane as you flip through some of your favorite childhood books.

Human Services program honors Dr. Bruce Hall

The Human Services semi-annual practicum luncheon held on May 6 recognized 11 students who have completed the 160-hour program and honored a dear friend who passed away this past semester.

This practicum experience is a vital part of our student’s learning outcome and plays an integral role within the helping professions in our community.

Three students accepted full-time employment from their agency placement. We are proud to continue our ongoing relationships (since the mid 80s) with such diversity of agency placements. Additionally, agency supervisors, administration, faculty and staff were also in attendance.

Tribute was given to Dr. Bruce Hall who was a wonderful coordinator for the Human Services program for the past 4 1/2 years.

Hall passed away on Jan. 5. 

Hall enhanced and extended the Human Services program and was an excellent instructor. Hall was inspirational, had divine inner wisdom, was quick witted and very dedicated to the Social Work profession. He will remain solely missed by his colleagues and students.

MCC-Longview students celebrate Cinco De Mayo with toe-tapping style

MCC-Longview students strapped on their dancing shoes as DJ Victor Mabu took over the Cafe today to teach Salsa dancing.

Mabu not only played the rhythmic dance music, but also get on stage to show Longview how to properly dance to the infectious Salsa music.

 The event was part of the Campus Life & Leadership's planned activities to celebrate Cinco De Mayo.

MCC-Longview student feels inspired by Phi Theta Kappa national convention

Through the eyes of our students: Oscar Aguilar and several other MCC-Longview PTK members attended the 93rd international PTK convention in Seattle, Washington. Oscar asked if he could share what the experience meant to him and his peers. This is what he wrote:

Phi Theta Kappa 93rd international convention officially began on April 7 when Dr. Rod A. Risley, the Executive Director of Phi Theta Kappa, set the tone and spirit of the convention by challenging students from all around America to become scholars so they may learn how to lead and serve. His words constantly echoed in the minds of the of the audience present; especially, when Dr. Risly invited the students to be the leaders who galvanize people around them.

Dr. Risley’s words prepared PTK members for a convention whose main focus would be to ingrain tremendous importance of scholarly research in the mind of the students.

For this purpose, several educational forums were held during three days, in which PTK members explored in-depth techniques to approach scholarly research, ways to develop and fulfill a research project, and, most importantly, the importance of reflecting once the project had taken it final form.

MCC-Maple Woods acting students perform Plays in Progress

MCC-Maple Woods Acting I & II students will demonstrate everything they've learned this year in an acting showcase: Plays in Progress, a series of five 10-minute plays written and directed by theater instructor Daniel Wright. The show, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. April 27 in the Student Center Theater. Mature audiences only.

The MCC-Longview Flights of Fancy kite festival 2011 soars to new heights

The weather might have started cool, but it did not stop people from coming out to MCC-Longview's front lawn to watch some of the most amazing kite displays in the Midwest.

Preliminary numbers indicate that more than 15,000 people packed the festival grounds for the fifth annual Flights of Fancy kite festival. But kite flying was not the only thing going on on campus as the festival also hosted a kite historian in the Cultural Arts Center showcasing kites from the past.

The Kansas City Kite Club once again also put on an amazing display of mega kites and stunt kites.

One of those kites flying overhead also had a camera attached shooting some amazing photos of the festival from several hundred feet in the air.

The Mighty Voices of Longview: April 29, 30 and May 6, 7

The Mighty Voices of Longview return for another show-stopping concert at the MCC-Longview Cultural Arts Center.

Starting April 29, you and your family can delight in the music and sounds of Disney on Stage as the show choir from MCC-Longview performs a range of Disney musical classics.

MCC-Longview faculty explores 'Brave New World'

It is a scary and strange world within Aldous Huxley classic Brave New World. Soma pills, rigid class structure and birthing factories are just the beginning of how deep some of the criticisms Huxley was making in his book about London in the year 2540 A.D.

As part of the MCC-Longview common reading project, faculty from across various departments and specialties will sit down for a one-night-only panel discussion about the various themes, critiques and metaphors Huxley deployed in his work.

Don't miss out on this unique experience to explore not only the book itself, but the times and cultural influences that shaped Huxley himself in 1931 Europe.

Bill Tammeus, Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn to discuss 'They Were Just People' at annual Holocaust remembrance concert

Former Kansas City Star Faith section columnist Bill Tammeus and Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn, spiritual leader of the New Reform Temple, will be the guest speakers at this year's Story of the Arts of the Holocaust concert at MCC-Maple Woods. The multidimensional program will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 3 in the Campus Center Arbor Room. This event is free and open to the public, but due to content, is encouraged only for those aged 13 and up.

Tammeus and Cukierkorn will be discussing their recent collaborative book "They Were Just People: Stories of Rescue in Poland During the Holocaust," a collection of narratives from Holocaust survivors and non-Jews who risked immediate execution by aiding them. The authors travelled extensively throughout the United States and Poland to interview the remaining survivors to share their stories, many of which have never been told.

Bill Tammeus began his work for the Kansas City Star in 1970, and though he formally retired from the Star staff in 2006, he still submits columns and freelance articles to the newspaper's Faith section.





Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn, a native Brazilian who emigrated and was ordained in the US, is the leader of the Temple Israel of Greater Kansas City. His ancestry includes Polish Hasidic rabbis who emigrated to Brazil in 1929, and he is dedicated to reuniting offshoots of Judaism, mainly in Latin America.

Lee's Summit City Council renames April Kite Month in honor of the Flights of Fancy kite festival

Lee's Summit City Councilman Allan Gray and Mayor Randy Rhodes read from an official city proclamation naming April Kite Month in Lee's Summit. After the reading, the two city officials presented it to festival manager Jill Ladas.

The ceremony at the regulars session of the city council on Thursday gave Ladas a chance to talk about how the festival started as just a small gathering of kite hobbyists and has now become one of the largest free kite festivals in the Midwest.

Episcopal Community Service reception catered by MCC students

More than 75 people attended the reception hosted by Episcopal Community Services (ECS) to celebrate the partnership between their Culinary Cornerstones program and the MCC Institute for Workforce Innovation (I.W.I.). The event was held at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral and catered by none other than MCC students participating in a new professional food preparation course.

The reception introduced the 15 MCC students enrolled in the program, many of whom were once served free meals at the ECS Community Kitchen. These students now have the opportunity to serve others while pursuing a career certificate under the tutelage of Anthony Herring, chef and director of the culinary program; Craig Adcock of Belly Up Bar-B-Que; Jude's Kansas City Rum Cake, and volunteer instructors.

In addition to the five hundred hot meals served to the homeless and underprivileged every week day, Culinary Cornerstones also boasts a professional catering service to give students plenty of hands-on experience. Last week's reception was the students' first time actually preparing food. Reception guests were left with high hopes for future student-catered events, including the program's graduation ceremony scheduled for May.

"Cooking and teaching-- it's a great combination," said John Hornbeck, president and CEO of ECS. Everyone agreed, the results were delicious.

The MCC-Longview Flights of Fancy kite festival, presented by Farmers Insurance, is celebrating its 5th anniversary.

Once again, members of the Kansas City Kite Club will have some of the most amazing kites on display at this FREE event for all ages.

Professional kite flyers from around the Midwest will be flying their mega kites and stunt kites all day while the rest of the MCC-Longview campus will be open for public kite flying.

“There is no better way to welcome spring than to spend the day flying a kite on the grounds here at MCC-Longview,” festival manager Jill Ladas said.

As the festival continues to grow, we also continue to offer more FREE activities for kids, including: a bounce house, face painting, balloon artists and much more.

The festival will open at 10 a.m. on the MCC-Longview campus.
