Rewards for Marriott

Like the hotel chain that bears her name, Patti Marriott is known for great hospitality.

“She’s the kind of person who just makes things happen,” said one colleague. “She is unassuming and treats all people with respect and cordiality.”

Her cordiality and hospitality are what earned Patti the honor of May employee of the month for the Administrative Center. Patti is known around the AC for being kind and committed to her work.

“She is not loud or pushy, just goes about her job of advancing the MCC mission every day,” said her nominator.

Loan defaults? Not on her watch!

Dena Norris has a challenging job, but she does it with patience and with compassion. That’s why she’s been chosen as the Administrative Center employee of the month for February.

Dena, nominated by a colleague because of her warm and persistent commitment to serving students in need, holds an important position on the MCC financial aid team. As the program coordinator for default prevention, she works to keep students in good financial standing with their lenders and to keep MCC in good standing with the U.S. Department of Education. In other words, she helps students avoid defaulting on their loans which helps the district to maintain a low default rate.

In her direct work with students, Dena (pronounced Day-na) contacts students whose loan payments are past due to encourage them to set up payment arrangements or to let them know what options are available. More proactively, she also contacts students who are at risk of defaulting to help them get back on track with payments.

This financial literacy component is what Dena says she enjoys most about her job. When she counsels a student on how to avoid damaging their personal

AC Annual Holiday Lunch

Each year, the AC Staff Association organizes a holiday lunch for all Administrative Center employees. The last few years, all the administrators have pitched in to buy the main course, while employees bring in a side dish for all to share. Thank you administrators!!

Roger Banbury usually organizes some fun sing-alongs, and he pulled through once again this year with his versions of Santa Claus is Coming to Town (Chancellor James is Coming to Town), Jingle Bells (a song about retirees) and White Christmas (I’m dreaming of a Chiefs playoff).

We are working to resolve technical problems with the MCC Notify Me texting service

It is clear that there is a technical glitch with our new MCC Notify Me text messaging sign-up service.

Some have been able to successfully sign-up while others have not. We are looking into the technical issues and will address them as soon as possible

If you need to log into your computer this morning and can't get the text messaging system to work, please opt out for now.

We will obviously need to give everyone another opportunity to sign-up as soon as possible. It is critical that we get this system to work correctly.

I apologize for this inconvenience. We will keep you informed as we get additional information.

MCC replaces lighting - saves energy

Metropolitan Community College (MCC) has been around the block a few times, and so have some of the infrastructures of the older buildings. With five campuses across the metro area, MCC has made significant changes to the way it operates – taking on the challenge to become greener and more energy efficient.

Beginning in May, MCC began a project to retro-fit the vast majority of the internal and external campus lighting, most with motion sensors.

Working with Facility Solutions Group (FSG) and in-house construction crews, MCC will replace the lights and ballasts in more than 24,000 fixtures by the time the project is complete. In other areas new fixtures and lighting controls are being added.

Jim Frank, FSG division manager, explains that there have been advances in the lighting industry the last few years and MCC is receiving the latest in technological advancements. With the new systems in place, the benefits gained include:
· Better lighting
· Instant on
· Energy savings
· Recycling of old parts

“There are several other tangible benefits from the lighting change,” said Darrel Meyer, director of MCC facility services.

The new lighting will generate less heat in the buildings, which will save money on cooling costs. The bulbs come with a 3 year warranty; ballasts have a 3-5 year warranty. The bulbs produce more even lighting throughout each room. “Because the bulbs and ballasts are new, MCC saves money on the replacement bulbs and labor,” said Meyer.

The campuses are in several different phases of the project. Once complete, there is an expected $250,000 projected annual savings in electrical costs that will pay back the cost of the project over a six year period.
