The Woods goes green for Movie on the Lawn!

What could be better than a FREE movie under the stars? MCC-Maple Woods will be showing The Green Lantern at 9 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Campus Center Amphitheater (that big blank wall under the hill in the middle of campus). Free popcorn will be provided, so bring a blanket, a drink, and a date and enjoy the show!

Blood Drive at MCC-Maple Woods!

MCC-Maple Woods will be sponsoring a blood drive from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Student Center. Cookies and juice will be provided, and all donors will be gven a free t-shirt and be entered to win one of 3 $50 gift cards. The Community Blood Center is really in need, so please consider donating!

MCC-Maple Woods sponsors "sleep-out" for One Homeless Night

Northland college students will get a sense of what it's like to be homeless when they participate in One Homeless Night, sponsored by MCC-Maple Woods and Synergy Services from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. March 25, 2011. This event is open to all MCC-Maple Woods students, faculty and staff. To become involved, email campus life and leadership coordinator Misty Chandler.

The event will include activities centered on raising awareness for youth homelessness. "The Pursuit of Happyness" will be shown on the Campus Center lawn at 9 p.m. and there will be guest speakers with personal experiences to share.

Hundreds of raise awareness for youth homelessness each year during the metro-wide "sleepouts," which helps raise funds for programs that address the national problem. Proceeds from the event will benefit Synergy Services, a local youth crisis program.

Fitness Day at MCC-Maple Woods - healthy snacks and flavored... air?

MCC-Maple Woods students got a taste of something they didn't expect at Fitness Day - air. Students were able to sample different "flavors" of oxygen, each with a different aroma-therapy effect.

Students also competed for passes and 3-month memberships to the Maple Woods Fitness Center with a hula hoop competition and a plank contest.

"We're on a plane for Hawaii... aren't we?"

Several students at MCC-Maple Woods had the experience of "flying" to Hawaii after hypnotist Dan Lornitis navigated them through a hypnotized plane ride.

Contests, College Survival Day, a resource fair with campus reps and tasty free food were all part of the festivities at the event hosted by the Campus Life and Leadership office.

MCC-Maple Woods welcomes new students at orientation

First time students, whether they are fresh out of high school, returning to school after several years away or transferring from another institution, find helpful information and welcoming faces at the beginning of each semester.

New student orientation, sponsored by the campus life and leadership and admissions offices, give students an opportunity to get familiar with the campus, learn what they need to do to be successful in their courses and how to manage their financial obligations.

MCC-Maple Woods hosts 3-4 new student orientation sessions each semester, focusing on different groups for specialized information – re-entry students, traditional students and students receiving A+ benefits.

MCC-Longview declares: My 'T' is for tolerance

The black 'My T is for Tolerance' shirts dotted the MCC-Longivew campus on Tuesday as students, staff and faculty honored a day that sends the message that hate and hostility is not acceptable here or any where.

Campus life and leadership was selling t-shirts all day as part of the global effort to promote International Day of Tolerance.

T-shirts are still available for $5 and can be picked up on campus all day.

Linda Langston, administrative assistant in campus life and leadership, has been named October Employee of the Month at MCC-Maple Woods.

Linda invests herself wholeheartedly in all the work projects that she takes on. Her "above and beyond” work habits include the detailed and very creative banners and signage for events, baskets decorated with fountains of curling ribbon, and office décor touches that add class and fun to the academic and work environment.

She constantly documents activities, events and wonderful student moments with photos and then sends them via email or Facebook to share with others. She keeps all the photos well organized and archived for departmental and campus marketing purposes. She stays in touch with the students through texting and Facebook and sends out reminders as needed. This is all beyond the rest of the routine work of event planning, documentation, contracts, and more mundane paperwork involved with campus life and leadership office activities.

Check out the Hispanic Heritage Month events at MCC-Maple Woods! A salsa-tasting contest, free salsa lessons, a Day of the Dead presentation and display by the internation communication class were all part of the celebration.

Cheer on the Chiefs and aid students!

It’s that time of year again – the Chiefs are back in action, winning their first two games of the season for the first time in several years. It’s also back-to-school time for cash-strapped students, many of whom find it difficult to deal with the costs of attending college.

The MCC-Maple Woods Collegiate Activities Board (CAB) is offering the opportunity to support both the Chiefs and local college students. Tickets for the Oct. 24 Chiefs home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars are available for $25 – for every ticket purchased, $10 will be donated to the MCC-Maple Woods Emergency Book Fund. The tickets, which can be picked up in the Student Center at the campus life and leadership office, are available to everyone, and there is no limit.

The Emergency Book Fund, which is completely funded by donations from students, employees and community members, provides funds for students to purchase required textbooks. Funds are awarded based on financial need.

MCC-Blue River Salutes National Hispanic Heritage Month

If you enter in the east entrance of the Education Building on the MCC-Blue River campus, your eyes will instantly be drawn to a vibrant, colorful display featuring National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Amy Slater, the Campus Life and Leadership coordinator, is responsible for Blue River’s creative cultural display. Slater says “it is important for everyone to realize that so many different cultures, races, etc. have made the world what it is today.”

The month long celebration started yesterday and lasts through Oct. 15. According to the National Heritage Month website, it began in 1968 under Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration. In 1988, Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration to thirty days. This year’s national theme is “Heritage, Diversity, Integrity and Honor: The Renewed Hope of America”.

As Student Ambassadors at MCC-Maple Woods, these students promote events, give tours to prospecitive students, perform campus and community service and do whatever is necessary to make sure "the Woods" is a positive, peaceful campus for students and visitors. They undergo leadership training at the beginning of each semester so that they can work together with adminstrators, faculty, staff and other students to promote everything MCC-MW has to offer.

If you've seen a fun or wacky event on campus, thank the Collegiate Activities Board, or CAB. These students host a series of events each semester to keep students motivated, active and engaged on campus. Everything from free hot dogs to movie marathons to stress-relief massages is courtesy of CAB.

MCC-Maple Woods employees and students play for softball supremecy

MCC-Maple Woods hosted it's first employee/student softball game, braving the slippery, wet conditions to battle for softball bragging rights. Great hits, overthrown balls, "slides" into second base (we're looking at you, Terrell), frizzy hair and barefoot thirdbasemen were all a part of the fun but soggy afternoon.

The employees won the game 6-4.

MCC-Maple Woods stresses good choices at Alcohol Awareness Day

Helping inform students so that they can make good choices and drink responsibly was the main focus at MCC-Maple Woods' Alcohol Awareness Day, sponsored by campus life and leadership. The Missouri Highway Patrol was on hand with what was left of a smashed up vehicle and a rollover simulator to show students the harsh consequences of making poor decisions - like drinking and driving.

Students were also able to test the consequences for themselves - safely, of course. Students put on "drunk goggles" and tried to navigate their ways through the Highway Patrol's sobriety tests and an obstacle course. Walking around ordinary object like large blue trashcans was more difficult than any expected, kicking a soccer ball proved nearly impossible and walking in the straight line test administered by the patrolman was extremely shaky.
