MCC-Maple Woods graduate and student employee moves on to Missouri State

Andrew Wilson, a MCC-Maple Woods graduate, former Ambassador and right-hand man for the Campus Life and Leadership office is movin' on up! Andrew is now attending Missouri State University and plans to major in art/animation. In his years at The Woods, Andrew served students, faculty and staff in many ways, including giving tours, helping plan activities, volunteering and amateur videographer. He will be greatly missed as our "Roving Reporter."

On behalf of everyone at Maple Woods, thank you for everything you've done, Andrew, and we wish you the best of luck at Missouri State. Go Bears!

Student Ambassadors take pride in being the face of Maple Woods

MCC-Maple Woods admissions recruiters talk to prospective students, visit high schools and college fairs, and answer questions about the college, but one of the first impressions of Maple Woods to prospective students, first-time enrollees and their parents is provided by the Student Ambassadors.

Student Ambassadors give extensive tours of the campus to visitors, prospective students and their families. They answer questions, talk about student life and set anxious parents at ease.

This week, the Ambassadors will be completing an extensive training session designed to teach them how to best serve students and visitors to the campus and be a unique, knowledgeable face for the campus and MCC, focusing on leadership, teamwork and responsibility.

Students prepare for fall semester as summer slips away

As the last weeks of summer "vacation" start to speed up despite a bunch of smart guys telling us that time moves at a constant rate, new students at MCC-Maple Woods begin the process of enrolling for classes and becoming familiar with the place they'll be spending a good portion of their time in the coming months.

New student enrollment groups are designed to walk students through the enrollment process in small groups so that advising and admissions reps can answer questions, walk them through step-by-step and introduce them to other important services like financial aid, student employment or even campus life. After learning the ropes of MyMCCKC and selecting classes, the participants tour the campus with Student Ambassadors, as both groups learn more about the Woods.

MCC Student Ambassadors live, learn and lead at MSU

The 2^nd Annual Student Ambassador Leadership Conference was held at Missouri State University June 23-25.  Fifty-one students from nine different community college campuses attended this unique learning experience where the students lead the workshops along with area Student Ambassador Sponsors from Maple Woods, Longview, Penn Valley and Blue River. 

Rodger La Beth was asked to attend as the event’s keynote speaker where his presentation titled “Carpe Diem” kicked off the week’s theme of finding your passion and working with passion. The students participated in teambuilding, diversity, communication, and community service workshops all while spending quality time on a 4-year college campus. All participants stayed in the community-style residence hall and ate in the student cafeteria. MSU was a generous host and even gave every student a $20 giftcard to their campus store.  (So don’t be surprised to see a lot of MSU gear next semester wandering around your campuses!)

This leadership opportunity not only allows our Student Leaders to network and gain motivation for moving on to their 4-year institutions, it helps all of our colleges have better, more professional tour guides to lead our next generation of students through our front doors.

Penn Valley honors top scholars, advocates

The end of the school year marks a time when Penn Valley pauses to pay tribute to those who've made amazing progress. Convocation honored the best and brightest students as well as faculty and staff who've made remarkable contributions to the campus.

Awards presented included: Applied Language Recognition, Project Success Student Achievement, Student Ambassador College Service, Homors, Outstanding Student Leader, Outstanding Athletes, Outstanding Contribution to a Special Interest Group, Outstanding Student Advocate, Academic Achievement, President's Appreciation, President's Citation and Outstanding Contribution to the College.

Student Ambassadors were recognized for another great year of service.

Penn Valley student ambassadors assist with Haiti relief

It's been more than a year since the devastating earthquake ravaged the island of Haiti. While news coverage has decreased, the hard work of rebuilding the country continues.

MCC-Penn Valley Student Ambassadors answered the call to help the citizens of Haiti by hosting several fundraisers during the school year. The group hosted bake sales, garage sales and other events for the cause and presented a $500 check to Heart To Heart International to assist in the organization's Haiti relief efforts.

Ken Bevers of Heart To Heart accepted the donation and shared ongoing efforts the organization is hosting. He also said the organization would use the campus Student Ambassadors as an example as the group   reached out to colleges across the area in hopes of geting college students involved in world relief efforts.

Metropolitan Chorale aids Habitat for Humanity with “edgy” Mark Twain barbershop concert

Habitat for Humanity will get a boost from the Metropolitan Chorale of Kansas City’s “Hardhats for Habitat” show for the fifth year in a row at the choir’s April 30, 2011 performance. Last year’s event raised nearly $4,000.00 for Habitat for Humanity, and over the past four years the Metropolitan Chorale has donated over $15,000.00 to the charity. This year the choir will be teaming up with the MCC-Blue River Student Ambassadors to undertake the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home as well.

The benefit concert will feature the barbershop stylings of the vocal group Central Standard, and the narrator will be an irascible Mark Twain, played by Kansas City radio personality Dick Wilson from 94.9 KCMO. Each year

MCC-Maple Woods Student Ambassadors awarded for dedication and leadership

Student Ambassador Leadership Awards were recently presented for outstanding work and contribution to the MCC-Maple Woods campus for Fall 2010.

Duc Nguyen received the Ambassador Rookie of the Semester Award which recognizes first-time ambassadors for exemplary service and excellent performance during their first semester as an Ambassador. Duc was the videographer for the group and made great videos promoting ambassadors and their events. He will assume the role of Social Chair for the Spring 2011 semester.

Ashley Brimeyer received the Extraordinary Monarch Award. Ashley exhibited high levels of professionalism and leadership along with an above-and-beyond work ethic devoted to developing a positive team atmosphere for the group. Ashley served as the Ambassador Secretary and has accepted the position of Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Spring 2011 Semester.

Penn Valley helps needy student families for Thanksgiving

MCC-Penn Valley faculty, staff and students came together to make Thanksgiving special for needy students. The campus donated $1,434.00 towards the purchase of 21 full holiday meals for needy student families.

The amount was above what was needed and extra funds will be diverted to the Penn Valley Student Emergency Fund.

The annual Thanksgiving Meal Fund Drive is hosted by the Student Ambassadors. Gwen Moffett-Pate is the advisor.

Students honored at MCCA convention

The Missouri Community College Association (MCCA) recognized five students from MCC on Friday, Nov. 5, with Student Leadership Awards.

Jenn Mahurin – MCC-Blue River: Mahurin is president of the Student Ambassadors at Blue River and assists new students with enrollment and orientation. She plans to obtain a master’s degree in higher education.

Timothy Wilcox – MCC- Business & Technology: Wilcox completed a four- year apprenticeship at Ford and BTC. He has since earned several IT certifications, and is working on AAS degrees in several areas.

Jason Skinner – MCC- Longview: Skinner is the president of the student government association, a student ambassador and a new student orientation leader. One of his current focuses is on increasing student involvement in campus athletics.

Andrew Wilson – MCC- Maple Woods: Wilson serves as the president of the ambassadors group. He is active in student orientation and has given over 300 campus tours in his year and a half at Maple Woods. He is also a student worker in the office of admissions.

Sereptia Evans – MCC-Penn Valley: Evans is an honor student working on her completion of an Associate’s degree with plans to study veterinary medicine. She holds many leadership positions at Penn Valley and is involved in community service. Evans is a recipient of the Bloch Scholarship.

Ferris Bueller comes to MCC-Blue River

Tonight at 7 p.m., MCC-Blue River’s Student Ambassadors will host a movie night featuring the famous 80’s teen rebellion comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day off”. This free, fun viewing will be shown on the big screen in the Arts and Sciences gymnasium.

Popcorn is free and additional concessions will be available to enhance the movie watching experience! Check out Blue River's Facebook page to view full flyer.

The event is part of several recurring opportunities (hosted by the Ambassadors) for students and community members to relax on campus in a free, safe environment.

Anyone familiar with this student organization knows they know how to have a good time, so come out and be a part!

MCC-Penn Valley ambassadors continue to raise funds for Haiti

The Student Ambassadors at MCC-Penn Valley were a welcome sight for anyone with sweet tooth recently. The group hosted their annual bake sale with proceeds benefitting Haitian relief.

MCC-Penn Valley student recognized for outstanding leadership

Sereptia Evans gives her all in classes, at work and in the various offices she holds at MCC-Penn Valley. Evans is president of the Student Ambassadors. Recently she found out her hard work was appreciated and that she will be honored as an Oustanding Student Leader awarded by the Missouri Community College Association. Evans will receive the honor at the MCCA convention on Nov. 5 in St. Louis.

Chancellor meets with students

Chancellor Mark James met with several students from across the MCC district yesterday. James brought the group together to give students an opportunity to discuss campus safety and other topics of interest the students have about their campuses.

MCC-Penn Valley Ambassadors to host fundraiser for Haiti

Students at MCC-Penn Valley are doing their part to help the people of Haiti rebuild their country. The Student Ambassadors are hosting a garage sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the front of the Carter Art Center & Gymnasium entrance.

"While the catastrophe that brought this country to its knees is no longer making headline news, the needs are still great," says Gwen Pate, advisor and Student Ambassadors sponsor.

As Student Ambassadors at MCC-Maple Woods, these students promote events, give tours to prospecitive students, perform campus and community service and do whatever is necessary to make sure "the Woods" is a positive, peaceful campus for students and visitors. They undergo leadership training at the beginning of each semester so that they can work together with adminstrators, faculty, staff and other students to promote everything MCC-MW has to offer.

If you've seen a fun or wacky event on campus, thank the Collegiate Activities Board, or CAB. These students host a series of events each semester to keep students motivated, active and engaged on campus. Everything from free hot dogs to movie marathons to stress-relief massages is courtesy of CAB.

Both groups of students are motivated by Misty Chandler, interim campus life and leadership coordinator.

MCC-Maple Woods' Green Leaf Cafe gets a new look for fall

Students, faculty and staff returning to campus for the fall semester may notice something different about the Green Leaf Cafe when they come in for breakfast or lunch on Tuesday: the cafe has a bright, shiny new coat of paint, thanks to interim campus life and leadership coordinator Misty Chandler and the Student Ambassadors.

The Ambassadors undertook the project last week, giving the walls a fresh coat of pain and sprucing up the interior for a fresh, new semester. Thanks for all your hard work!
