Earth Day @ MCC-Longview

Campus Life and Leadership invited student to paint a hand-leaf to add to the Earth Day tree in the Campus Center. The tree will collect more painted leaves Friday in the Campus Center cafe.



Of course, no student activity would be complete without a free smoothie!

It's a PACKED house at MCC-Longview's High School Senior Visit Day

It was a packed house at the MCC-Longview senior day event on campus Monday. Seniors from area high schools visited campus and got their first look at how to become an MCC-Longview student.

Registrar David Fritz said there were well over a hundred students all interested in becoming future Lakers.

"It is pretty impressive in there," he said talking about the overflowing Mel Aytes Education Center.

The seniors were brought up to speed on how to apply for financial aid, register for classes and prepare themselves for the upcoming transition from high school graduate to college student.

MCC-Longview's Gay-Straight Alliance host drag show benefiting AIDS Walk KC

MCC-Longview’s Gay-Straight Alliance is hosting the campus’s first ever Drag Show competition. Everyone is invited to come support this great student organization and their efforts to raise money for AIDS Walk Kansas City.

The show will be at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, in the Mel Aytes Education Center.  There is a suggested donation of $3 at the door.

In April of 2010, nearly 4,000 people participated in AIDS WALK Kansas City and raised over $516,000 for the brave men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in our hometown. To date, there has not been one cure and HIV/AIDS infection is on the increase. In Kansas City, more than 5,700 people live with HIV/AIDS, 700 of those being between the ages of 13 and 24.

Therefore, the 23rd annual AIDS WALK, presented by the AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City, will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Theis Park, just south of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Registration opens at 8 a.m, Welcoming Ceremonies commence at 9:00 am and we walk at 10 a.m.

MCC-Longview shows some love to The American Heart Association

This past Valentine's Day, MCC-Longview students were invited to decorate their own sugar cookie to give away to their special valentine.

But students were showing the love to The American Heart Association as they donated a dollar for each cookie to decorate.

Minute to Win it with the MCC-Longview Engineering Club

Members of the MCC-Longview Engineering Club participated in a Minute-to-Win-It style competition during their December meeting on Wednesday.

In less than a minutes members had to complete specific puzzles or tasks (which were hard even for our engineers) to advance to the next round.

In the competition above, teams of two sat back to back as one person had to describe how to construct a small Lego-like set to another person who could not see it. Sometimes, the finished product did not quite match the original design.

Ferris Bueller comes to MCC-Blue River

Tonight at 7 p.m., MCC-Blue River’s Student Ambassadors will host a movie night featuring the famous 80’s teen rebellion comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day off”. This free, fun viewing will be shown on the big screen in the Arts and Sciences gymnasium.

Popcorn is free and additional concessions will be available to enhance the movie watching experience! Check out Blue River's Facebook page to view full flyer.

The event is part of several recurring opportunities (hosted by the Ambassadors) for students and community members to relax on campus in a free, safe environment.

Anyone familiar with this student organization knows they know how to have a good time, so come out and be a part!

Seating is limited, so grab a friend and arrive early to get a good seat!
