MCC-Maple Woods offers free computer courses to community

Whether you’re confused by Excel’s frustrating formulas, need to learn Access for a new job or just want to brush up on some basic skills, MCC-Maple Woods offers computer classes and lab access to the community. The courses require registration and attendance at an orientation session.
To register for courses or the orientation session, contact the MCC-Maple Woods community education office at (816) 604-3011. The orientation session and courses are free, and there is a one-time fee of $3 for an MCC-Maple Woods ID card.

Computer skills and proficiency are now considered crucial information by many employers, and finding a job without them can be next to impossible. Geraldine Ross, who is returning to the workforce after 20 years as a bookkeeper at a local business that was forced to close, said she feels behind the curve when it comes to job searches because of her lack of computer knowledge.
“These days, you really need to catch up on all these skills to compete with younger workers,” she said. “Most job applications are online these days, too, so I’m going to have to learn these skills in order to market myself for a job.”
Other courses cover information not deemed business or career-oriented, but that many people consider crucial all the same: social media. Parents and grandparents can learn to keep in touch with family members via Facebook, Twitter, blogs and more.
The courses, taught by MCC-Maple Woods staff, cover a variety of topics, including email; internet; Microsoft Word, Excel and Access; Windows; and basic computer usage skills. Class sizes range from 12-15 individuals and some classes require proficiency in computer usage or other programs. Class participants also can take advantage of open computer lab access Mon.-Thurs. in Learning Resources’ Community Technology Center.
