HOLIDAY SUCCESS: MCC-Longview Recreation Center raises more than $2,000 for Harvesters

The MCC-Longivew Recreation Center successfully raised enough money to feed more than 10,000 people this past holiday weekend.

As part of the MCC-Longview Charity Boot Camp, personal trainers and staff there invited people to donate money and food online as the Rec Center and Harvesters partnered in a month-long campaign for the local food network.

With each donation to Harvesters, visitors would receive a free 45-minute cardio workout session at the Rec Center.

By the end of the end of the campaign, more than 22 people showed up Friday morning to break a sweat for charity. But even more took up the call online as organizers said they raised more than $2,000 for Harvesters.

In a letter to participants, MCC-Longview personal trainer Ryan Layman thanked everyone who helped make the event a success.

Thank you for visiting the MCC Longview Charity Workout Virtual Food Drive for Harvesters! Our drive was a huge success, collecting enough money and food to enable Harvesters to provide 10,014 meals for those in need in our community.
Thank you for your support of Harvesters and hunger relief!

MCC-Longview marathon class

Sure, students can sometimes complain that going to class is like running a marathon, but what if your class WAS ACTUALLY running a marathon?

Well, MCC-Longview’s John O’Connell and Jim McGraw, both running enthusiasts, will be teaching runners how to run for distance in a semester-long class beginning this coming Spring. The class will take runners from varying experience levels and give them the training they need to run their own marathon.

Not only will the class be fun, but you can also earn college credit, too.

O’Connell, who works with the Longview Recreation Center will be focusing on the physical aspect of training and conditioning for the long run.

McGraw, a counselor at Longview, will work with participants to make sure they are focused mentally to take on such a run and will keep them motivated throughout the process.

Both agree, with a combined effort they can get just about any one ready for a marathon of their own.

To sign up, check the MCC-Longview online schedule or contact McGraw or O’Connell for more information.

PHED 198 or GUID 199B: 2-credit hours

Saturdays 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

MCC-Longview recreation center is pumping up for charity

Recreation Center

MCC-Longview's Recreation Center is once again ready to break a sweat and get physical to for charity.

Partnering with Harvesters, staff at the Longview Recreation Center are asking for donations that will benefit the community food network.

With each new donation participants are then invited to participate in an hour-long cardio workout the day after Thanksgiving to teach them good workout skills to stay healthy this holiday season. A single donation through their website, which goes live on Nov 15, gives you free admission to the workout event, which is part of a nationwide charity drive by Harvesters.

Last year, staff at the recreation center led an hour-long cardio workout where they raised more than $200 for the American Heart Association. This year, they are hoping to make the event a little bit bigger. Organizers hope to raise enough donations to feed more than 1,000 families.

MCC-Longview Recreation Center revitalizes the Walk-A-bouts program

Recreation Center

Summer is here and it is the perfect time to get back into shape with a few simple steps that can help you each day.

Starting June 6 the MCC-Longview Recreation Center is sponsoring a month long Walk-A-Bouts program that will challenge every employee to walk 10,000 steps A DAY!

“We figured everyone likes to have some sort of challenge in their lives and everyone likes to feel a since of accomplishment when you finally achieve that challenge!” said Amber Vandevender from the MCC-Longview Recreation Center. “You’re thinking WOW; No way can I do that! I’m thinking; I LOVE A CHALLENGE!”

Challenge your co-workers, your friends or go head-to-head against another department to see who can take the most steps to a healthier you. It is as simple as picking up an inexpensive pedometer at Wal-Mart or one of the many health and fitness stores in town and just start walking.

The challenge will run until July 3 and each week participants will need to turn in their walking sheets to the Recreation Center to keep up with the campus-wide program. At the end of the month, Amber will be announcing the winners and posting their picture on the Wall of Champions at the LV Recreation Center.

The challenge is in conjunction with several other challenge programs going on at the LV-Recreation Center this summer.

If you have any questions or want to download a walking log sheet please feel free to E-mail Amber at Amber.Vandevender@mcckc.edu
