A message from MCC-Longview president Fred Grogan: Civility, respect are the cornerstone of scholarship

The recent suicide of a gay student at Rutgers University, along with at least four other such incidents across the country, remind us that as a college community we need to remain vigilant about providing a safe campus environment for all of our students.

I ask that each of you reinforce our ideals of mutual respect and concern for others with colleagues and students.

Attached below is a copy of Longview’s “Civility Creed”. It has been used for several years and was adapted from that of the University of North Carolina. I hope you will share and discuss this with other colleagues and students. If you are interested in sharing copies of this with others, you may make copies of this attachment, or contact Dean Janet Cline’s office. If you are aware of incidents of bullying or harassment, please bring these to Dean Cline’s attention.

Dean Cline will also distribute a draft of a “MCC-Longview Anti-Bullying, Harassment, and Victimization Guidelines” that we are considering adopting. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions about this document.

I thank you for helping to insure that Longview can become a place that does not experience mistreatment of any of our students and employees. I also vow that we will take appropriate action to deal with incidents when they do occur.

Fred Grogan
MCC-Longview president
