September and October offered MCC-Blue River students - and the community - creative ways to get active on the Blue River campus.
During the weeks of Sept. 27 and Oct. 1, MCC-Blue River hosted Dodgeball and 3 vs. 3 Intramural Basketball tournaments. The teams were comprised of students and several of their [non-student] friends. Students participated for free, but received a Blue River fitness and recreation t-shirt if they paid $5 dollars. All proceeds went to the Blue River Student Ambassadors. In total, $170 dollars was raised.
According to David Owens, Blue River’s Fitness, recreation and athletics coordinator, the event was a good way to “provide a fun, inexpensive sports activity for our students, as well as bring people onto the Blue River campus.”
Spotting a great opportunity to market the college, Owens said, “Who knows? Maybe some of the non-student participants will be future Blue River students.”
In all, six teams competed in the two day 3 vs. 3 Basketball Tournament. The victory went to team Future captained by Blue River student Rodney Brown. After picking up his winners t-shirts, Brown asked, “When’s the next one?” Brown and everyone else will be thrilled to know the next opportunity is schedule for Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. inside the Gym on the Blue River campus.
Until then, students can play 5 vs. 5 in an open gym basketball format every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. For more information, contact David Owens at 816.437.1958.
