November is National Diabetes Month. This makes it a perfect time to learn more about diabetes and adapt healthy new lifestyle habits.
Did you know the National Diabetes Education program says some types of diabetes are preventable? For instance, one can lessen their chances of acquiring Type 2 diabetes by “losing 5 to 7 percent of one’s body weight through increased physical activity” in addition to “a reduced fat and lower calorie diet.”
MCC-Blue River makes it easy to incorporate health and fitness into the weekly routines of staff, students and faculty. Here’s one example: Blue River’s fitness coordinator, David Owens, recently organized several fun, open tournaments (including dodge ball and volleyball) in the Arts and Sciences gym. He schedules most games during the lunch-time hours for easy participation.
In addition to organized Blue River activities, many staffers also incorporate workout regimens into their off-campus schedules. Among them are Blue River president, Dr. Joe Seabrooks, and Dean of Student Development, Dr. Jon Burke. Similarly, executive assistant, Cari Hustedde fits exercise into her work week. “You have to make the time to work out", says Cari.
Campus Food Services offers a variety of healthy meal options including fresh fruit, a fully-loaded salad bar, veggie and turkey burgers as well as whole wheat pizza crusts. Another handy tool is their online menu, complete with nutritional facts to help diners make healthy food choices. Click here to view the daily menu and nutritional information.
